This item is from an estate, being a pair of wine country themed prints from Germany made pre WWI, likely produced considerably earlier than that conflict. They are undated, but have much identification information printed on the sheets. They were brought back as souveniers and travel trophies by an AEF army doctor who stayed over for part of 1919, after hostilities ended, and toured the area he was assinged to for the reconstruction. It was in the Mosel river, wine country. It is surmised that these pictures were on sale somewhere on his travels and were acquired about circa 1919, both as souveniors as well as fine art acquisitions. They then lay stored in his service trunk for about 93 years. Expertise is unavailable here, but the prints appear to be lithographs. They are signed as being published by "verlag Hanfstaengl's Nachfolger, Berlin" and numbered #600 and #626, named "MOSELBLUMCHEN" and "RHEINGOLD" respectively. The figure with the glass in her left hand is #600, "MOSELBLUMCHEN", the other being "RHEINGOLD." The pictures are taken from originals, with "J. Lieck" responsible for #600 and an "R. Hahn" for #626 in the originals. It is thought that both paintings were painted around the mid to late 1800s and the plates after them in approx. 1880-95. It is doubtful that they were newly made when the doctor acquired them, nor were fresh stock. The images are quite bright still, but the board bordering each is faintly browning, a slight ecru tint only where once was possibly cream or stark white. Other than that there are practically no flaws to speak of, maybe a speck here or there or a little extra ecru shade at the edges...............no chipping, tears, or the like and only very slightly bumped corners. They are no longer absolutely flat, as made, having a slight rise and fall of the surface of the board making a "wavy" effect of maybe one degree or so from the horizontal.....framed it would not be noticable. They have not seen much light of day or been handled much. Outside dimensions are 8 3/4" X 11", with the images inside being 5 1/2" X 7 1/4". The images appear to have been pressed into the board stock when applied as there is a slight bevel indention on each. The process seems identical and that and the series of numbering suggest that they may have been part of a run made for celebrating images of the women of the German wine country. Possibly, they were made to use in early wine advertising or public accommodations, as well as for their stand alone beauty. Both are classic examples of early Art Nouveau....................
